Vitamins C /Ascorbic Acid / Anti-ascorbic Vitamins:

Structure of Vit C

  • Water soluble Vitamins also called ascorbic acid
  • Also called anti-ascorbic Vitamins

Why VitaminsC called anti-ascorbic Vitamins?

Vitamins-C deficiency cause scurvy and scurvy is also called ascorbutus.
  • In human body, both form is present at a time.
  • As it is a water soluble Vitamins, it is least store as compare to fat soluble.

Functions / Role of Vitamins-C:

1    Vitamins-C form Collagen (connective tissue in ECS, also called ground substances between the cell and bind them). Collagen made up two protein 1) Protine, 2) Lysine.
Protine is hydroxylated form and lysine is hydroxylated form is require for mature Collagen function
Enzyme areprotinehydroxylare and lysine hydroxylare while these require Vitamins-C as a Co-Enayme.
2    Ci-C also require in formation of Fibroblast (Kind of connective tissue) it form fibers e.g in oeteroid tissue, dentine and enter cellular cement substances of capillaries.
3    Vitamins-C deficiency cause Microcytic hypochromic anemia
4    Vitamins-C required for conversion of ferric in to ferros
Ferrous Fe+2 is absorbic
Ferrous Fe+2 form chelates (complete formation) with Vitamins-C

this conversion require enzyme follatereductase / folic acid dehydrogenase.

Follic acid maintan proper shape of RBC’s so it is very important in RBC’s maturation. While deficiency causes large size RBC’s

6    it takes part in ETC (electron transport chain) as a reducing agent where finally ATP are form) it is also called Respiratory Chain. It involve some enzymes, Co-Enzymes and reducing agents with help in ETC.
7    it is require as a Co-enzyme for Dopanine β Hydroxylase which for nor-epinephrine.
8    Also require by the TrypthopthanHydrooxylase as a co-factor
9    LipisMetabolisn: it is required in α oxidization (oxidation starts from α- carbon)
